Big Comeback Falls Short,     Dawgs Lose In OT, 26-20

LYONS — Quarterback John McDonald rallied Toombs County from 14 points down but threw a game-ending interception in overtime as the Bulldogs fell to Brooks County 26-20 in the Class AA Playoffs.

Toombs Co. (8-3) totaled 467 yards of offense in the loss but was victimized by four turnovers. McDonald threw for 198 yards.

The Dawgs scored on their first possession with a 48-yard drive but missed the all-important extra point to take a 6-0 lead.

Brooks County scored twice in the second quarter and the Dawgs trailed 14-6 at halftime.

The Bulldogs trailed 20-6 to start the fourth quarter before McDonald threw a 62-yard touchdown pass with 4:06 remaining.  Toombs went for the 2-pt conversion which was no good and the Dawgs trailed 20-12.  Tailback Morris Smith scored his second touchdown of the game to tie the score with just 2:53 left in the game.  The 2-point extra point try was good knotting the score, 20-20.

Brooks Co. (8-2-1) scored on its first possession of overtime.  The Trojans halfback was hit on the two yard line and fumbled the ball into the endzone for a touchdown to take a 26-20 lead. Two plays into Toombs Co.'s possession, McDonald threw an interception.

 VIDALIA----Travis Badie rushed for 75 yards on six carries and scored a pair of touchdowns to lead No. 4 AA Vidalia (2-0-1, 1-0) to a shutout victory over Toombs County (1-2, 0-1).

Badie scored on runs of 8 and 39 yards. Rafael Roundtree (8 yards) and Ryan Gibson (44 yards) added rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Josh Sasser threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Josh Harrell. Sasser completed 4 of 7 passes for 60 yards.

TCHS Crushes Winless Claxton, 47- 8

LYONS — Toombs County scored in four different ways in jumping out to a 27-0 first-quarter lead and rolling to the 47-8 victory over Claxton in a Region 3-AA game Friday night.

The Bulldogs scored on a kickoff return, twice on runs, a 20-yard pass and a safety in the first quarter. Cedric Evans opened the scoring with an 85-yard kickoff return, John McDonald scored on a 5-yard run, Bryan Johnson scored on a 53-yard run, and Chuck Hill caught a 20-yard pass from McDonald, all in the first quarter.

Toombs scored twice more in the second quarter on a 10-yard pass from McDonald to Brandon Sharp and an 11-yard pass from Brian Jernigan to Robert Robinson for a 40-0 lead at the half.

The Bulldogs wrapped up their scoring with a 2-yard run by Ranard Florez in the third quarter.

Claxton scored on a 22-yard run by Larry Kennedy in the third quarter.

Toombs is 2-2, 1-1 in 3-AA. Claxton is 0-4, 0-2 in region play.

BROOKLET----The Toombs County Bulldogs traveled to Brooklet and played their best game of the year.  Focused and ready to play a good, powerful Yellow Jacket  team, the Dawgs put 28 pts on the board in the first half and never looked back.

The Dawgs scored on its first four possessions and racked up 298 yards in total offense in the first half.

Toombs is 3-2, 2-1 in Region 3-AA.  SEB falls to 3-2, 2-1.

LYONS —The Toombs County Bulldogs rolled over the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets in the Pit.  TCHS built a 33-0 halftime lead and coasted in for the victory.

Toombs is 4-2, 3-1 in Region 3-AA while Jeff Davis falls to 2-4, 2-2.

An Incredible 570 Yards Brings Down Unbeaten East Laurens, 37-18

DUBLIN — Ranard Florez ran for 234 yards and three touchdowns as Toombs County totaled 570 yards offense in a 37-18 defeat of East Laurens.

Bulldogs quarterback John McDonald threw two touchdowns in the opening half to help his team open up a 31-12 lead.

Toombs County improves to 5-2 overall, 4-1 in the region with the win while East Laurens falls to 5-1 overall, 3-1 in the region.

LYONS —The Toombs County Bulldawgs rolled over hapless Bryan County by the tune of 48-0 Friday night in the Pit.

Toombs improves to 6-2, 5-1 while Bryan County drops to 2-5, 0-5 in region play.

No Scare By Telfair,  Dawgs Howl,  47-21

McRAE — Toombs County's Ranard Florez tricked the Telfair defense for 215 yards and four touchdowns to treat the Bulldogs to a 47-21 defeat of Telfair County.

Quarterback John McDonald completed three of four passes, two for touchdowns, for 88 yards for Toombs (7-2 overall, 6-1 region).

Telfair County's record falls to 2-6, 2-4.

No Mercy For Bleckley, Dawgs Win Finale, 46-14

LYONS — Robert Robinson rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown as Toombs County defeated Bleckley County, 46-14.

The "mercy rule" was again issued at halftime because Toombs led by more than 30 points.  The "mercy rule" allows the clock to run non-stop during the second half.

Robinson was one of four Bulldog backs to score in the victory. Renard Florez scored two touchdowns and finished with 72 yards. He had three 40-yard runs called back on penalties.

Brian Johnson and Jared Allen also scored for Toombs Co. (8-2 overall, 7-1 region), which finished with 342 rushing yards.

Bleckley County falls to 2-7, 2-5.

Toombs County No. 2 Football Power In Coastal Empire In Past 10 Years

The Toombs County Bulldogs ranks just behind the Screven County Gamecocks as the No. 2 team in the Coastal Empire in wins (84-33), is tied for third in playoff wins (9-9) and third in winning percentage (.718) over the last 10 years. …Has made playoffs nine years in a row, the longest streak in the Coastal Empire. …Has reached the state quarterfinals four times – 1994, 1995, 1997 and 2000. …Has nine consecutive winning seasons. …Won at least eight games seven years in a row from 1994-2000. …Went undefeated during the regular season in 1995. …Has five 10-win seasons – 1994, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2000.

GISA State Class A Title

CORDELE -- Congratulations to Coach Lyman Guy, the coaching staff and players of Robert Toombs Christian Academy for their incredible run to the state championship.  The Crusaders defeated two-time defending state champions Crisp Academy in Cordele by a convincing 35-0 troucing.

New Region Alignment Coming In 2004

     The GHSA has approved new region alignment for the 2004 football season.  Region 3-AA will be one of the toughest regions in the state with the likes of  Screven County, Swainsboro, Dodge County, Dublin, Metter, Savannah Christian, Terrell County and West Laurens moving in.  The region will expand from the current 9 teams to 14 and most likely split into two divisions.
